What's happening?
South Wairarapa District Councilis proposing to make changes to speed limits to some roads around the South Wairarapa.
Our proposed planidentifies the changes to speed limits we plan to make andoutlines our implementation programme.
Our approach prioritises speed management around schools and marae, as well as high-risk routes, where we believe speed limits should be lower. We want both those who call South Wairarapa home and visitors alike to be safe when using our streets and roads. That means we need the right speeds on the right roads for all road users, whether you are walking to the shops, biking to school, or driving to work.
Consultation will open later this month, where you will be able to share your feedback on the proposed sped limit changes, and let us know if there's anything we've missed.
Background
The Government’s Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 (The Rule) outlines the framework for setting and managing speed limits. This Rule, implemented by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) aims to create a safe and efficient transport system by considering speed limits alongside other safety infrastructure and enforcement measures. Road Controlling Authorities (RCAs), like our Council, are responsible for implementing the rule on their respective roads, including state highways and local roads.
Under the requirements of the Rule, South Wairarapa District Council must consult with our communities onour proposed Speed Management Plan. Involving the community ensures that speed limits are set in a way that considers the actual use of the roads for all road users, including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, ensuring informed and effective decisions that enhance road safety and meet the needs of the local population.
While what we will consult on is similar to what we consulted on in 2023, it accounts for changes by 'The Rule' along with some additional changes to some other roads that council has considered in this time.
